Learning from Bhopal:
A Symposium
On Saturday April 9, 2005, the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD)
hosted a Symposium entitled "Learning from Bhopal." The
event drew 40 people, mostly students but also members of the RISD
and Brown faculty and community. "The experience of Bhopal
provides an important model of what should not be repeated and how
to creatively and steadfastly address the most persistent injustices.
The
Learning from Bhopal Symposium allowed for a discussion about ethical,
environmental, and creative issues of profound urgency at the international
and local levels." Gary Cohen, the Executive Director of the
Environmental Health Fund in Boston, and Satinath Sarangi, the managing
trustee of the Sambhavna Clinic, spoke about the situation past
and present in Bhopal. Speakers from the Rhode Island School of
Design - Charlie Cannon, Landscape Architecture and Industrial Design;
Robert Cowherd, Architecture; and Elizabeth Hermann, Landscape Architecture
- spoke about how architects and designers can constructively respond
to both natural and man-made catastrophes, from the recent tsunami
to cyclical flooding in Bangladesh to war and industrial blight.
Simone Pulver, member of the Watson Institute of International Studies
Global Environment Program's faculty at Brown University, emceed
the event and offered her own thoughts at the conclusion of the
panel discussions.
