AID Portland

"Return-to-Sender" Action

Monday 1st, 2003: We attended the Portland Jobs with Justice monthly meeting, talked about Bhopal, and presented the petition to Dow. They not only signed it individually and endorsed it as a group, but some of them also came to the RTS action on the 3rd!!

Wednesday 3rd: We here in Portland went as a group of six to Board Member Keith McKennon's residence (via a good hike uphill by foot) to deliver the water. He was either not home or didn't come to the door, so we left a message. We have photos of us at his address holding lit candles and the water, letter, and survivor's stories, which will most likely come in some local papers. We had members of Jobs with Justice, the Environmental Justice Action Group and AID among us! We are going to try again to deliver the water to Mr. McKennon in person, when he doesn't expect us.

"We for Bhopal" Visits Portland

On September 8, 2005, Akhil Katyal, a student from Delhi University in India and representative of "We for Bhopal" visited the AID chapter in Portland to talk about student activism for Bhopal in India and the fact-finding trip to Bhopal that students from Delhi undertook in October of 2004. "The talk went very well and was well received by who attended. The only sore point was we could not attract enough attendees. The good thing was Akhil was happy to talk to few very interested folks than 40 uninterested listeners.

"He touched upon We for Bhopal, its conception, their meeting with President which led to the fact finding mission and their actual mission. Their documentary film was screened followed by his personal experiences during the mission. It was very educative for all of us to know firsthand information. Akhil also fielded questions from audience and the evening ended with a pizza dinner in the Portland State Univ campus. Akhil was also happy about this visit and I would summarize his trip as a mutual learning for AID-Portland and Akhil."

"Bhopal: Time for Justice"

Sathish Sundaram from AID Portland gave a talk on "The 1984 Bhopal Gas Disaster- Time for Justice" on Saturday, January 21, 2006 at 7 pm at Central Oregon Environmental Center in downtown Bend. The talk was organized by the local Amesty International chapter. More than 25 people braved a snow storm that day to attend the talk. The talk was primarily focussed on Corporate neglect and the double standards followed by UCC and Dow in providing justice to the victims. The attendees listened with keen interest and asked several questions about UCC, Dow and the social and economic impact of the disaster on Bhopalis. The audience were given information on Sambhavana clinic and how AID is supporting livelihood projects. A 17min video titled "Twenty Years Without Justice" giving glimpses on the 20yrs of struggle, the complexity of the problem and the victories achieved was also shown. Sathish gave pointers to find more information on Bhopal and requested the Bend chapter of Amesty International to provide continued support to the Bhopal cause. The support for Bhopal continues to grow day by day which gives hope that justice will be delivered to those unfortunate victims sooner than later!

'Dow: Clean Up Bhopal Now'

On May 6, 2006, the Portland chapter of Association for India's Development (www.aidindia.org) organized a Bhopal awareness action at Portland State University in coordination with the Indian Students Association (ISA) at PSU. Volunteers distributed handouts briefing about the Bhopal Gas tragedy that happened in December 1984. They demanded Dow to own liabilities by holding posters that read 'Dow Clean Up Bhopal Now'. The action generated 50 signatures from supporters on a petition that demanded Dow Chemical Company to face trial, provide long term health care, provide economic and social support and clean up the toxic waste at the Bhopal site. The action was carried out at two separate events. The first event was held at the Portland farmer's market between 10am and 1:30pm. The second one was at ISA's Sanskriti event between 6pm and 9pm. This action was done to remind Dow about its responsibilities ahead of its annual shareholder's meeting on May 11.

WE ALL LIVE IN BHOPAL

"The year 2003 was a special year in the history of the campaign for justice in Bhopal. It was the year when student and youth supporters from at least 30 campuses in the US and India took action against Dow Chemical or in support of the demands of the Bhopal survivors. As we enter the 20th year of the unfolding Bhopal disaster, we can, with your support, convey to Dow Chemical that the fight for justice in Bhopal is getting stronger and will continue till justice is done. We look forward to your continued support and good wishes, and hope that our joint struggle will pave the way for a just world free of the abuse of corporate power."
