Pressuring Dow Boardmember
Willie Davis
Willie D. Davis, a Dow Board member since 1988, resides in the
Los Angeles area, and students from Occidental have unsuccessfully
attempted to set up a meeting with him to discuss the Bhopal disaster.
Clayton Perry, one of the leading campaigners at Occidental, reported
that Davis "didn't want to meet so I left a letter, some of
the fact sheets, and some of the photos in an envelope on his doorstep.
The next day I called his office and had like a 30 minute conversation
with his personal secretary, basically just me yakking about the
atrocities. At the end I told her to tell him that if he chooses
not to respond to this he could expect demonstrations at his house
and office. That night I got a call from 'Dwayne' who I think was
probably a lawyer." Clayton repeated his demands to 'Dwayne',
but the call was inconclusive. Although Clayton hasn't staged his
demonstrations, he hasn't gotten his meeting yet either, which,
he says, makes him think that maybe it is time for a few demonstrations...more
soon.

Pressuring Dow Boardmember
Jackie Barton
On December 10th, 2004, five students from Occidental were joined
by students from CalTech as they passed out flyers on the CalTech
campus, which described the Bhopal disaster and calling on Jackie
Barton, one of Dow's Board members and a Professor at CalTech, to
agree to the Bhopal survivors demands and to work within Dow to
make sure that the company accepts responsibility for the Bhopal
disaster.
“If we can influence them to give the people of Bhopal justice
and humane treatment, that will be a huge leap forward,” Perry
notes. “I love what I do.”

Bhopal Teach-in
Students at Occidental College in Los Angeles have been educating
their fellow students about the tragedy of Bhopal. They sponsored
a teach-in and documentary screening on their own campus, and several
students attended the talk by Nity Jayaraman, a longtime Bhopal
activist from India, at CalTech.
