20th Anniversary Day of Action

On the 20th anniversary of the Bhopal disaster, December 3rd, 2004, the Minnesota chapter of the Association for India's Development held several events to raise awareness and demand justice for the victims. These included two street performances, one at the UM campus, the other in downtown Minneapolis; a candlelight vigil on campus; a screening of "Bhopal: The Search for Justice"; a lecture and roundtable discussion with Dr. Elizabeth Guillette titled "Bhopal: 20 Years Later - A Continuing Disaster: Health Effects on the Second Generation" (organized by the School of Public Health); and an article in the student newspaper, the Minnesota Daily. We also donated a copy of the book Trespass Against Us and the documentary Twenty Years Without Justice to the University of Minnesota library.

19th Anniversary Vigil and Documentary

The testimonial of a Bhopal survivor is read during a solemn candlelight vigil at the University of Minnesota on Dec. 3rd.

On Dec. 3rd, 2003, the 19th anniversary of the Bhopal disaster, we at Minnesota started the evening with a candle light vigil. People took turns reading poems and survivor testimonies.

The vigil was followed by the screening of the documentary, Seduction of Dr. Loya. There was a discussion after the screening. The discussion focused on actions that can be taken at the University for raising awareness among students and faculty. There was a discussion on whether the university's ethics policy is in line with accepting research funding from Dow.

Documentary Screening and Discussion

The University of Minnesota chapters of the Association for India's Development and the Indian Students Association co-sponsored an Oct. 2nd, 2003, screening of the "Dateline" documentary, and invited Kinnu and Ryan to speak after the screening and answer questions. More than 25 people turned out for the event and participated in a wonderful discussion afterwards, which lasted more than an hour and a half.

WE ALL LIVE IN BHOPAL

"The year 2003 was a special year in the history of the campaign for justice in Bhopal. It was the year when student and youth supporters from at least 30 campuses in the US and India took action against Dow Chemical or in support of the demands of the Bhopal survivors. As we enter the 20th year of the unfolding Bhopal disaster, we can, with your support, convey to Dow Chemical that the fight for justice in Bhopal is getting stronger and will continue till justice is done. We look forward to your continued support and good wishes, and hope that our joint struggle will pave the way for a just world free of the abuse of corporate power."
