Bhopal Debate

On November 15, 2004, Paul Damore, a student at Grand Valley, participated in a debate with a student government representative on the Bhopal disaster and Dow's unfulfilled responsibilities there. More than 30 people attended the debate, about half of whom signed a petition demanding that Dow accept its responsibilities in Bhopal.

Paul writes:
Jason's main points were to say it wasn't right to hold a company liable for something that happened 20 years ago and not under their watch. Also, why would banning the donations force Dow to clean-up Bhopal and The Tittabawassee River Floodplain?

Someone in the audience asked Jason, why can't we try it and see if it works (concerning the petition). Jason had nothing to say. I had to keep emphasizing to people Dow owns Carbide and their problems. Also had to tell them pressure works (concerning forcing Dow to cleanup), and listed examples.

It lasted about an hour. And he never did any research on Dioxin, it was basically me talking about it, so it made him look bad, well it should have anyways. But there were a lot of Jason Loyalists there. I brought up the comment that Midland has the higher than average diabetes and cancer rates. Then he said well if it is that bad, why isn't anyone doing anything about it, so he tried watering it down.

WE ALL LIVE IN BHOPAL

"The year 2003 was a special year in the history of the campaign for justice in Bhopal. It was the year when student and youth supporters from at least 30 campuses in the US and India took action against Dow Chemical or in support of the demands of the Bhopal survivors. As we enter the 20th year of the unfolding Bhopal disaster, we can, with your support, convey to Dow Chemical that the fight for justice in Bhopal is getting stronger and will continue till justice is done. We look forward to your continued support and good wishes, and hope that our joint struggle will pave the way for a just world free of the abuse of corporate power."
