Protest at a Dow Facility |
Do YOU live near a Dow facility?
If so, organize a vigil outside, rope off the fenceline with “Crime
Scene: Do Not Cross” caution tape, draw chalk outlines
in the street outside, or attempt to meet with the plant manager
as a delegation to express your concerns about Dow's continuing
inaction in Bhopal.
What To Do
The no-frills plan is simple: hold signs or a banner outside the
plant, near the entrance/exit, and hand out information about Bhopal
to the workers as they enter in the morning or exit at night (depending
on when their shift ends). This is important because the workers
may not know much about Bhopal (and Dow would like to keep it that
way) and because you can invite the local media
to cover your event (they like to cover protests). If you'd like
to engage Dow more directly, you can present them with a jhadoo
or a sample of contaminated water
from Bhopal.

Action Items
Go
on a reconnaissance mission. Scope out the site as far in advance
as you can. Drive by it beforehand so that you have an idea of what
it looks like, what might be public property, where you can hold
your protest, where you can park, etc. All this information will
be very useful to you later on. Also, find out when the workers
enter or exit the plant, and for how long - this will help you decide
when in the day to hold the protest.
Contact
National Lawyers Guild in your
area to ask for a legal observer if you can get one. You may also
want to think about what is public property and what is private,
and whether you'll need a permit (and what to do if you don't get
one, and they tell you that you need one).
Make
signs. (this is fun)
Decide
what you want to hand out to the workers. Something simple, describing
what happened in Bhopal and how Dow is responsible should be fine.
Put
out your media advisory and invite the media
to come with you for the protest. Local TV may be interested - they
like protests.
Bring
along a camera or two yourself to take photos of the event.
If
you’ve chosen to, ask to speak with the plant manager. Even
if you aren’t allowed to see the plant manager, you should
insist on leaving any objects that you may have brought with you
to deliver. Your protest shouldn’t last longer than an hour.
