"Fighting Corporate Globalization" Discussion

On June 28, 2004, AID-Tucson and the Southwest Network for Environment and Economic Justice (SNEEJ) hosted “Fighting Corporate Globalisation: Lessons from Bhopal, India, A Panel Discussion & Strategy Session on Global Solidarity.” With speakers including Nityanand Jayaraman of the International Campaign for Justice in Bhopal and Teresa Leal, the Co-chair of SNEEJ, the panel at the Univ. of Arizona Students Union drew a crowd of about 25 people -- Indian students (about 7), teachers, Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, 3 students, a handful of local professionals, Indymedia, SNEEJ members, and others.

Ramon Reyes from Congressman Raul Grijalva's office made excellent opening remarks linking Bhopal to local issues, such as the toxic plume in the Tucson Aquifer. The existence of this plume of Trichloroethylene is acknowledged by all, and is known to have come from the arms factories in the region. Reyes also mentioned the Nogales border crossing to Mexico as a high danger potential area. All traffic to and from Mexico passes through this Sonoran gateway. Given the high traffic, the fact that large tankers of hazardous chemicals also cross the border along with tourists, commuting school children and workers poses a serious threat.

The discussion led to a decision to meet again on July 13, 2004, to discuss plans for highlighting corporate crime and global linkages in the lead-up to the anniversary. Two ideas that may be revived for discussion are: Corporate Crime Film Fest (we need to develop a list of good corporate crime films) Corporate Crime Hall of Shame Awards (a la Greenwash awards).

Photo Display and Movie Screening

On December 3rd, to mark the 20th anniversary of the Bhopal disaster, AID-Tucson displayed photos and posters of the Bhopal gas tragedy, handed out flyers about Bhopal on campus at the University of Arizona and screened the movie Bhopal Express. AID-Tucson also donated a copy of the new book about Dow, Trespass Against Us, and the new film about Bhopal, Twenty Years Without Justice, to the University of Arizona college library.

WE ALL LIVE IN BHOPAL

"The year 2003 was a special year in the history of the campaign for justice in Bhopal. It was the year when student and youth supporters from at least 30 campuses in the US and India took action against Dow Chemical or in support of the demands of the Bhopal survivors. As we enter the 20th year of the unfolding Bhopal disaster, we can, with your support, convey to Dow Chemical that the fight for justice in Bhopal is getting stronger and will continue till justice is done. We look forward to your continued support and good wishes, and hope that our joint struggle will pave the way for a just world free of the abuse of corporate power."
