The Danube

RriSaturday, 9 July 2011

So yesterday, I did a lot of climbing on the Buda side of the city, and the happy product is the wonderful views you enjoy.

Budapest-Danube1

Budapest

This is the Danube, of course. The bridge in the foreground is the chain bridge, the first permanent bridge built over the Danube. It’s about 150 years old. And that imposing building to the left is the Parliament.

Again, the chain bridge, but this time the notable building is St. Stephen’s Cathedral. You can see the dome poking up above all the other buildings.

Budapest

This is from Gellert Hill, which is even higher than Castle hill. In fact you can see Castle hill on the left, on the Buda side, and Pest – including Parliament and St. Stephen’s – on the right.

A final look to the north.

The Border

Wednesday, 6 July 2011

This is what the border between Bulgaria and Romania looks like:

Danube

The Danube

The River Danube, in all its industrial glory. In fact, if you were to look back to the left a ways, you’d see seven – count them, seven – nuclear cooling towers. Lord help us if there’s ever a tsunami on the Danube.
